Alternate Versions In 1998, shortly after the release of Tomb Raider II, Tomb Raider was re-released for DOS and released for the first time for Macintosh. This release, titled Tomb Raider Gold in North America, and Tomb Raider: Unfinished Business elsewhere, featured the regular game as well as four new bonus levels in two extra chapters. The levels for Tomb Raider Gold were created in the San Francisco office of Eidos by Phil Campbell, Rebecca Shearin, and Gary LaRochelle. The first chapter of the game takes place in Egypt, and occurs several months after the events of Tomb Raider. The story sees Lara returning to the City of Khamoon to investigate a mysterious statue of the Egyptian goddess Bast. This leads to her discovery of an entirely new temple dedicated to the cat deity, which includes a giant gold statue several stories high.

The second chapter takes place before those of the first chapter - quite literally straight after the events of Tomb Raider. This chapter starts with Lara sliding down the same slope as in Tomb Raider's final level, and finishes with her destroying the last remnants of the Atlantean Race. This game has you do it all. You go through all kinds of different obstacles while fighting a different array of enemies.

The story is not the greatest, but hey, what can you expect for the first game in the series. Tomb Raider also threw in a little something different with Lara Croft breaking normal hero boundaries. Almost all video game (and real) action heroes were men until she came along. Don't get me wrong, there were quite a few women trying to be everybody's saviour, but Lara is much better. Gameplay is great, looks good for its time, and is fun to play. My rating 10/10.

It was developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive and was released for the PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows in June 2003. • Terrible and dated controls. The game came out in June 2003, so why does a 'walk' button still exist here?

• Horrible camera. • Nigh impossible jumping and platforming because of the above factors. • Tedious and repetitive combat. • Flat voice acting; having voiced Lara in the last two games, we know that Jonell Elliott can do better than this! • The game isn't as optimized as it should be, as it suffers from numerous frame drops at various points. • Multiple bugs and glitches. • The lack of checkpoints, and even an autosave feature.

Again, this came out in 2003. To add insult to injury, the game never prompts you to save your game. Even prompted you to save upon finishing a level.

Darkness

• Poor enemy AI. In stealth, you can walk right up to an enemy to the point where you are touching them, and they won't even react. We know Lara to be an acrobatic and physically strong character, so why does she need to gain strength to shimmy along the rooftops? • Multiple stealth segments which feel like an unnecessary addition to the game, since Tomb Raider was never about stealth.

• False Advertising: The cover shows Lara holding her Duel Pistols, but in the actual game the only way to get them is either by Gameshark for the PS2 version, or a Patch if you're using the PC version. • A particularly irritable glitch will cause Lara's death scream to play on an endless loop, if you pause the game during Lara's death. • Features a dialogue choice system, but the choices have minimal impact on the story. • Because of the aforementioned bad controls and dated save system, the gameplay as a whole feels like a PS One game with PS2 graphics.
