Bubble Bobble Featuring Rainbow Islands Game Over

Bud powell jazz giant zip ties. None of this material of course is previously unissued, as is the Olatunji set and some portions of the Live Trane box.

If the terrible opening CGI FMV intro hasn't made you run a mile, this is a rather interesting collection of ports of Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands. Once you've gotten over the awful intro (What were they thinking with that CGI intro, Bub sounds like he's the Joker with that laugh) and the rather clumsy title. What you have here is a collection of two of the greatest arcade games of all time, full of hidden depth and secrets.

Both games include enhanced graphics and Rainbow Islands has remixed music. On the downside the remixed graphics can't be turn off for Bubble Bobble and the original version of Rainbow Islands forces you to use the remixed music not the original audio. Just two of the many problems these ports have. While at first glance you might think you have two spruced up versions of the arcade version games you would be sorely wrong, as neither game is complete. Probe developed Bubble Bobble and while they improved the graphics, they didn't quite get the bubble physics to match the arcade version. The other huge issues is the cheat code for hard mode no longer works, meaning players can't see or unlock the true ending, oops. Not to mention the fact the game runs at a different speed to the arcade and plays differently.

As an example the enemies on the first stage come in way too slowly on this version. The port of Rainbow Islands has an even more interesting story as it appears Taito, lost the Rainbow Islands source code many years ago. Instead Acclaim went to UK developed Graftgold, who had previously made the fantastic Amiga port. Meaning this version is based on the Amiga port source code. Problem is Ocean who published the Amiga version in 1990, didn't want to release a two disk version of the game that would have given the Amiga an arcade perfect port. Instead they released it on one disk, cut out the three secret islands, removed most of the game endings, altered the order of bonus room items and made it so you couldn't continue from the six island. Yep it's bad and this cut up version is the one included on the collection it's a shame Graftgold, didn't correct their version for this port.

Acclaim published the game using their Taito license, yet Taito never released this collection in Japan and it's easy to see why. While it's nice to play both on the Saturn this is far from the complete package, buyers beware.

As the old industry saying went “Where there's blame, there's Acclaim”. Bubble Bobble also featuring Rainbow Islands was released on PC and PlayStation (PS1) but it hasn't been re-released since, these days you would be better off with one of the many emulated arcade versions.
